Placemaking in Action: Challenges and Lessons from the Wheaton Placemaking Initiative

This presentation will explore the Wheaton Placemaking Initiative, a project aimed at bringing the 2022 Wheaton Downtown Study’s planning recommendations to life. Focusing on enhancing underused public spaces, improving connectivity, and strengthening the sense of place, the initiative has faced evolving challenges in logistics, operations, and community engagement. Through a two-day activation event in partnership with the Wheaton Urban District, Montgomery Planning will share insights into the complexities of placemaking in a suburban context, highlighting the importance of collaboration with local partners and the need for sustainable, long-term solutions. Participants will gain valuable lessons on overcoming obstacles and navigating the realities of executing placemaking projects within government frameworks.
